BEST TIME FOR SUNSET PICS - BLUE VS. GOLDEN HOUR

The most coveted photoshoot time… SUNSET!

So what time makes for the best sunset photos? I’m sure you’ve all heard of ‘golden hour’ by now. That beautiful time of night where the sun is going down and it lights up everything golden and theres just this cast of light dancing across everything. I am not here to say that golden hour is not gorgeous, it is magical for sure.

HOWEVER!!!!!

Blue hour may have golden hour beat and here’s why…

  • THE COLORS! - When you shoot during golden hour you don ‘t get those beautiful colors in the sky, the sun hasn’t set low enough for them to come out. But if you wait for blue hour, the time frame after the sun has set while it’s still light outside… the colors are at their liveliest and it is SO beautiful for sunset portraits.

  • Less people - I swear everyone and their mother wants photos at golden hour - so if you wait for blue hour, you will just about have the whole beach to yourself! Everyone is already wrapped up, missing out on the most gorgeous time of night!! Their loss, our win!

  • All the cinematic vibes - if you are a documentary, cinematic, photos that look like they are straight off a movie screen lover like myself then look no further - this is THE BEST time for photos that give off all the nostalgic, cinematic, lively vibes we are looking for!

I recently had the pleasure of shooting a blue hour session with a lovely couple who wanted photos that truly reflected who they are. And let me tell you, the results were absolutely stunning! The soft, dreamy light of the blue hour created such a romantic and cinematic vibe that you just can't get during the golden hour.

One of the things I love most about shooting during the blue hour is the lack of crowds. It's just you and the gorgeous colors of the sky. This allows for a more intimate and authentic feel to the photos, capturing those candid moments that really showcase the couple's love and personality.

If you're a fan of film-inspired, moody, and documentary-style photography like I am, then I highly recommend trying out a blue hour session. The results speak for themselves, and I guarantee you'll fall in love with the unique and magical atmosphere that this time of day brings to your photos. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

So have I convinced you yet?! Are you team blue or golden hour…?
